December 21, 1891

Originally called Basket Ball and invented by James Naismith, one team beats another 1-0 at Springfield College (then the YMCA Training School). The teams are made up of nine players on each side trying to throw a soccer ball into peach baskets. It was devised to offer a game that could be played indoor during the winter months.
